New York night.

Spent the night in NYC last weekend. Visited some friends. Spent a few hours roaming MoMA. Went to a graduation part for my buddy Brian Schroy. Here’s a gallery of excessive images from the trip.

Taking stock.

without comments

How do I, as a photographer, judge progress and success? Part of the inherent difficulty in judging that is rooted in the term “photographer”—what does that mean? I am an artist and won’t hesitate to use that term at the proper time. But also in my role as a photographer I am a business.

I had an unexpected midwinter down day this weekend and I tried to take advantage and get some of the terrible organizational work (which I normally leave for airport downtime or late spring) out of the way—keywording, captions and the such. It was actually a good exercise for this moment, with a bit of winter left before the park shoot season and with plenty of time to meet up with athletes I haven’t shot with enough (or at all).

I was actually feeling crappy about my winter season overall. The photography side of my life has been stagnant—ambitious shoots falling through, business deals not working out and the disappointment of a two week break (midwinter!) to deal with the flu. But as I plowed through edits and started sorting photos into sub-catalogs for submissions later in the year (lifestyle, covers, photo annual, specific stories, etc…) I realized that as an artist this has been a successful winter.

I see more of my voice in the work I’m doing. I see more photos that—whether they’re published or over looked, whether they pay the bills or not—I will cherish as documentation of my life, as an examination of a person or event, as my own interpretation of the experiences I have chosen and through those things as a piece of art that I have created.

So here’s to searching out those “A+” shots and here’s to finding a voice and to making something for ourselves.

And here are some outtakes from the second week in Austria. Not A+.

Another year, another trip to Austria with Poorboyz Productions. Although I’ve been missing Simon, Jossi and TJ we’ve had a great time with Bene Mayr and Bobby Brown. Too tired to think, but here are some travel snaps, from Sunrise in Colorado to the obligatory over-wing sunset to a snowy train ride to waking up to bluebird powder to the crew to the next storm to the next bluebird day. Fun times.

Welcome back!

without comments

It’s been a long week and, gosh, I’ve been missing this blog’s most important contributor: me. I caught flu at the X Games and honestly haven’t been so sick since I was a teenager. The first day I felt better was like some sort of dream–I thought I would conquer the world in another day or two. Unfortunately, a week turned to weakness and it’s been hard to get back in the groove. But today, today I made strides. I actually called some people on the phone, I bought groceries, I listened to NPR, I left the house, I went to the Post Office and, perhaps more importantly, I welcomed back another sick member of my family.

Now in spite of my nerdy, technical brain I am not a huge advocate of technical ties to art. But sometimes a technique or a tool makes a synergistic leap with the brain of an artist. Stephen Shore moving to 8 by 10 after American Surfaces, Jasper Johns using wax and newspaper, Anders Petersen’s Black and White film, Jeff Wall’s light boxes, etc. But I’ve certainly had a love affair, technically with rangefinder cameras–I miss dearly my Mamiya 7 with its huge negatives. In the digital age, I’ve used a Leica M8 which unfortunately I destroyed by dropping a Canon 1ds on it (geek out about that collision as you wish…) Finally yesterday, I got the M8 back from Leica and although I plan on trading it in for an M9 soon, it was a joy to welcome it back into my hands and my brain today. More bloggy shots to follow as I carry that little camera and leave the house as I get my strength back.

Also, watch this video: Rodarte x Elle Fanning x Deerhunter x Todd Cole. Perfect.

Some shitty test shots while I ran errands:

Catching things.

without comments

Oh dear X Games. Every year something new and so much the same. This year, 18 hour days, off days (unheard of), portraits for Monster Energy, falls, beautiful shots, stock shots (that I hate myself for taking), disappointments and champions (Sammy and Alex). But I also caught Influenza (or something similar) and since Sunday at midnight I have: lost about 10 pounds, barely eaten, worn long underwear with multiple layers of sweats over them, ingested vast amounts and types of pharmaceuticals, coughed a bunch, taken one trip out of the house to Walmart for those drugs and done basically nothing. This morning I woke up, without a fever, and was able to have breakfast and even put on normal clothes.

So the next couple of days are dedicated to catching up on some other things. Here are a few photos from my friends build a float for Breckenridge’s Ullr Fest parade and from a amazing week of powder shredding that went down following the parade (five feet of snow in one week!).
