1 hour in the desert.
Photos from my drive to California for another ski photo shoot. Had about an hour of the most epic light I’ve ever seen.
Welcome back!
It’s been a long week and, gosh, I’ve been missing this blog’s most important contributor: me. I caught flu at the X Games and honestly haven’t been so sick since I was a teenager. The first day I felt better was like some sort of dream–I thought I would conquer the world in another day or two. Unfortunately, a week turned to weakness and it’s been hard to get back in the groove. But today, today I made strides. I actually called some people on the phone, I bought groceries, I listened to NPR, I left the house, I went to the Post Office and, perhaps more importantly, I welcomed back another sick member of my family.
Now in spite of my nerdy, technical brain I am not a huge advocate of technical ties to art. But sometimes a technique or a tool makes a synergistic leap with the brain of an artist. Stephen Shore moving to 8 by 10 after American Surfaces, Jasper Johns using wax and newspaper, Anders Petersen’s Black and White film, Jeff Wall’s light boxes, etc. But I’ve certainly had a love affair, technically with rangefinder cameras–I miss dearly my Mamiya 7 with its huge negatives. In the digital age, I’ve used a Leica M8 which unfortunately I destroyed by dropping a Canon 1ds on it (geek out about that collision as you wish…) Finally yesterday, I got the M8 back from Leica and although I plan on trading it in for an M9 soon, it was a joy to welcome it back into my hands and my brain today. More bloggy shots to follow as I carry that little camera and leave the house as I get my strength back.
Also, watch this video: Rodarte x Elle Fanning x Deerhunter x Todd Cole. Perfect.
Some shitty test shots while I ran errands:
